Hello! Today is my last full day in Ferrazzano. It’s also the last day of Ferragosto, so that means lots of celebrating and, yes, more food.
I forgot to tell you about Zia and Zio’s dogs. They’re great! They have four dogs. All of them are different heights and all of them are fat puppies. They are such characters that I had to paint a picture of them. I made this watercolor painting this afternoon for Zia’s Saint Day. Saint Days are like birthdays here, but this one is huge because it takes place during Ferragosto. I hope she loves it.
In case you are one of the (maybe two) followers of my blog who haven’t talked to me in person recently, I have exciting news to tell you! I’m taking a trip to Europe next Friday, the 6th. My first cousin Nicola is getting married on the 7th and having a big, fancy Italiain wedding. Half of my family is first generation Italian. That means most of them live way far away in Italy, mostly in Ferrazzano, Campobasso in southern Italy near Napoli. This year, I’m lucky enough to get to see all of them. I’m so excited and I’m very happy for Nicola. After the wedding, there’s a huge summer holiday taking place all over Italy called Ferrgosto. Most of Europe is on holiday during August and many Italians flock south around our town to eat, drink and party the whole weekend away. My dad says it’s a great time to be there, especially to experience local culture. It sounds amazing.
After Ferragosto, I’m going out all on my own to Berlin for a week. I’ve wanted to go to Berlin for so long. Berlin’s art and music scene sounds so amazing that I can’t even imagine what it’s like. I’ll be staying with a young creative couple for the weekend in East Berlin.
My final destination will be Amsterdam. Once again, I’m so excited and have no idea what to expect. I’ve heard that Amsterdam is a great city for working artists and designers. Also, as a citizen of Atlanta (where if you don’t have a car, live kind of sucks), I’m very interested in seeing a city so well planned for atleast five modes of transportation. I’ll be staying with a Dutch fine artist very near City Centraal.
I’ve never travelled alone anywhere before. I haven’t even been out of the southern United States since I worked in Colorado. It’s daunting, but totally possible and adventurous. I’m prepared for everything and nothing at the same time. I want some perspective.
I won’t be back until August 30th, but I hope to update this blog often with all the cool things I’ll be doing and the places I’ll go. Here’s to adventure!
